Southside girls soccer coach Jeremy Davis knows there is work to be done as the Mavericks prepare for the teeth of their 7A-Central schedule.

But he likes where the team is.


Southside (7-2, 2-1) resumes conference play today against North Little Rock.

"I am very pleased with the way our team has played," Davis said. "We have had great mindsets, ready to compete at the highest level night in and night out. We have really played together as a team this year, and not individuals."

The Mavericks have had outstanding balance, with five players scoring at least four goals. Kelly Carson leads the team with seven, followed by Rachel Smith with six.

"Everyone is scoring goals and trying to get the assists for the goals," Davis said. "Our back four has been very solid, and has limited opponents' scoring chances. I look forward to the second half of the season to see how we progress leading up to the playoffs."

Davis said he uses spring break as a way to re-energize the bodies.

"As much as I would like to keep the momentum going without a week off for spring break, it has been (a grind) for us," he said. "I think it is important for the girls to take their spring break and have fun; they deserve it. They put in time training all year and need to get their mind ready to go for the second half of the season. We had a couple of girls nursing some injuries that hopefully healed over spring break."

The Mavericks' boys team (7-5, 2-1) faces North Little Rock today. Chris Orellana leads the team with five goals, while Derek Gutierrez and Alex Mendoza have four apiece.
