Hunter Moreton has plenty of stories to tell his kids one day after competing in sports in Springdale.

He will forever be linked to a trivia question for scoring the last touchdown as a Southside Rebel — a TD reception in a 2015 semifinals football game with Har-Ber. Thursday in Springdale, he earned the school’s first track and field gold medal in the shot put.


The Arkansas State signee won the 7A shot put with a toss of 50-2 3/4, easily beating out Fayetteville’s Akial Byers for the title. Southside’s Miguel Hernandez was sixth overall with a throw of 44-10.

“It means a lot,” Moreton said. “I didn’t get to throw last year because of my shoulder, so it’s been a couple of years. But I’m proud of myself even though I didn’t throw as good as I wanted to.”

Moreton admitted he adjusted a little because of the cold and windy conditions.

“It was windy and a tad bit cold, so not the best conditions,” he said. “But I managed to work with it.”

Southside’s Ryan Wallace was seventh and Moreton eighth in the discus.

Van Buren’s Garrett Standifird was fifth in the discus.

Also in the field events, Northside’s Biyron Mcgrew was third (20-7 3/4) in the long jump. The Pointers’ Caleb Christensen finished fifth in the long jump.


Northside’s Tre Norwood and Van Buren’s Christensen finished third and forth, respectively, in the 100 meters.

Southside’s Mason Gregory was eighth (12-6) in the pole vault. Har-Ber’s Zach McWhorter set the 7A state meet record in the pole vault with a jump of 16-10, breaking Bryant’s Spencer McCorkle’s 2006 record of 16-8.

Southside’s Loren Hernandez finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 35-3 1/2. She was 10th and didn’t place in the discus.

Bentonville’s Isabel Neal won the pole vault event with a jump of 12-4. Southside’s Lauren Sutherland was fifth (10-6).

Van Buren’s 3,200 relay team finished seventh (10:3054). The group included Julia Clark, Jayden Thmpson, Daisy Connor and Amberlie Ming.
