Sebastian County champs. Again.

Greenwood’s seniors made it three in a row as unofficial county champs, romping past Southside on Friday night, 49-0, at Smith-Robinson Stadium.

The Bulldogs (2-0) rolled past Northside and Southside (0-2) to open the season for their 25th straight regular-season win and the 12th straight over Class 7A opponents.

“They have such a great tradition at both of those places,” Greenwood head coach Rick Jones said. “When you go to a game at Northside and you see those championships, and you think about the football players that have played on that field before. It’s a big deal. You hear about the great tradition they have at Southside. We’re happy to be Sebastian County champs, there’s no doubt about it. It just makes it more fun to go to the mall.”

Friday, Greenwood’s offense scored on all six first-half possessions to apply the Arkansas Activities Association’s Sportsmanship Rule for the third quarter with the continuously running clock.

Greenwood scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, three more in the second quarter and had 447 yards on 43 yards with 22 first downs.

“It’s week two and we have a long way to go, but for one night for today we played good football,” Jones said. “We just to not give up the big play we gave up defensively and, offensively, we’ve got to be a lot more consistent running the ball.”

Greenwood quarterback Connor Noland was 11-of-15 passing for 235 yards and three touchdown strikes, including two to Peyton Holt and another to Josh Barlow. Kenny Wood rushed for 166 yards and a touchdown.

“All in all, Connor and the guys in his posse did a pretty nice job,” Jones said. “They had good protection as well. We’ve got to take strides every day. We’ve got to get better every day.”

Greenwood took the opening kickoff and needed just 2:26 with Noland scoring from three yards out.

Greenwood forced a quick punt, and Kenny Wood followed Hayden Cantrell and Jon Womack, inserted as an extra lineman, into the end zone on a 9-yard scoring run.

After Southside missed a field goal, Greenwood struck quickly on a 41-yard pass from Noland to Holt, who tight walked the last few yards down the left sideline before diving for the pylon and scoring with 10 seconds left in the quarter.

Greenwood’s defense, which held Southside to 122 yards in the first half, force another punt, and the offense mounted a 12-play, 78-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard burst by Holt with 7:09 left in the half.

Southside moved into Greenwood territory but stalled, and Greenwood answered on Noland’s 56-yard touchdown pass on third down right down the middle of the field to Holt.

Aaron Ohl made a diving catch on an interception on Southside’s next possession, and needed just three plays to score its sixth touchdown of the half. Wood ran twice for 25 yards before Noland hit Josh Barlow after scrambling and finding Barlow deep in the end zone for 32-yard scoring play.

Grant Ennis added his sixth extra point with 1:43 left in the half for Greenwood’s 42-0 lead.

Neither team scored in third quarter with Greenwood’s Logan Workman returning a deflected punt 22 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Greenwood ended with exactly 500 yards of offense and 25 first downs. Holt had six catches for 153 yards.

Southside quarterback Taye Gatewood threw for 116 of Southside’s 191 yards.
