Dillon Hamilton came up big Saturday afternoon against Robinson.

So did teammates Ike Moore and Taye Gatewood.


Moore and Gatewood had huge buckets in the final three minutes as the Mavericks withstood the Senators 62-57 in the final round of the 39th Annual Coca-Cola Classic at the Stubblefield Center.

The Mavericks (8-6) open 7A-Central play Friday at Conway.

“Tonight we had a lead, they cut into it, and in past games we’ve made mistakes and weren’t able to finish,” Southside coach Charlier Cooper said. “Tonight, we were able to finish. Hopefully we’re growing a little bit.”

Moore led the Mavericks with 17 points and Hamilton finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Gatewood added eight.

Sophomore Elijah York hit three second quarter 3-pointers and finished with 10 points.

Southside led 37-25 at the half and appeared to be in control at 44-32 when Robinson began to chip away. The Sens got within 52-51 before Moore and Gatewood weaved their way inside for a pair of baskets and a five-point lead.

The Senators got not closer than three the rest of the way.
