One nightmare ended Monday afternoon. Another one finished off the season with something to build on.

Southside blew a seventh inning lead for the second game in a row as Northside rallied for a 5-3 win at Forsgren Field.

The game, which was rained out Friday, moved along quickly until the last of the fourth when Mother Nature reared its head again.

The game was delayed for more than an hour because of two lightning delays.

Southside (7-20, 2-12) will begin the 2020 with a 14-game losing streak, including its final 12 6A-Central games.

The Mavericks, in fact, opened the season with conference wins over Cabot and North Little Rock, before going 0-11

The Grizzlies got a huge two-run double in the seventh inning from starting pitcher Khaden Washington, followed by Tyler Becker’s run-scoring double to cap a three-run seventh.

Southside took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Matthew Moore walked, stole second base, took third on Colton McBride’s grounder and scored when Washington uncorked a wild pitch.

The Mavericks extended the lead to 3-1 with two runs in the fifth, including Moore’s sacrifice fly.


But Washington settled down and kept his team in the game until the lengthy lightning delay.

The Grizzlies (4-23, 3-11) got a run back in the sixth on Kadin Hyatt’s RBI double. He walked to open the seventh. Bobby Rauch walked and one batter later Washington doubled home the go-ahead runs.

Freshman Jett Frazier picked up the victory, with Donta Oneal earning the save, working around a walk and a single in the seventh.

Ryan Hamilton, who wiggled out of a sixth inning jam, was tagged with the loss.

Braiden Partin worked the first two innings for the Mavericks. Coach Dale Harpenau allowed his senior pitchers to get at least two innings of work.

Partin, who came in with a 1.13 earned run average, struck out four batters in two innings of work.
