The Southside Mavericks played Conway stride for stride last week before falling victim to a couple of big plays.

But coach Jeff Williams is encouraged by the team’s offensive production.

“From starting week 1 to where they’re at, they’re still developing,” he said. “We’re tied at the end of the third quarter. but we’re still making a few mental mistakes.

“But overall, our improvement from week one to where we’re at is pretty good.”

Quarterback Parker Wehunt threw for 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the team’s loss. Jake Tyler caught seven passes for 102 yards and another touchdown.

He leads the team with 17 receptions for 222 yards and three touchdowns.

Wehunt threw his first interception last week, but has still thrown for 524 yards and seven touchdowns.

He’s been sacked 10 times.

The Mavericks (1-3, 0-1) hit the road again Friday for Cabot.

“Taking a young team on the road for the first time can be difficult,” Williams said. “The kids have been working hard.”
