Southside football coach Jeff Williams saw a few surprises in Monday's scrimmage with Alma. For starters, unknown running back Ricardo Savoy played well for the Mavericks

But he was also pleased no one was injured as the Mavericks prepare for their Sept. 2 battle with Har-Ber.

"You never want to go in there and get anybody hurt, so we came away injury free," Williams said. "I thought we executed pretty well at times. Then, sometimes when we got a little tired we didn't execute as well. I thought some of our young guys did well."

Most notably, Savoy.

The 5-foot-8, 150-pound sophomore turned a few heads.

"Ricardo Savoy played well," Williams said.

"Dylan Wyatt is another guy I thought had a good game. Defensively, I thought we moved around pretty well. We've still got lots and lots of work today, and we've got to get better for Har-Ber on week one."
