One streak ended Friday. Another carried on.

But it wasn’t without a battle.

“I told the girls it was bout two runs,” Southside coach Robert Brunk said following Friday’s 52-26 loss to Mount St. Mary.

“The first quarter, we got down 15 and in the third quarter we got outscored by 10,” Brunk continued. “If we get rid of those two stretches, it’s a little bit different story. But that’s basketball. You don’t get to pick and choose what you want to do.”

The Mavericks’ story played out Friday the way it has for 44 straight games — with nothing to show.

But there are flashes.

Sophomore Dylon McCord popped three 3-pointers in the second quarter of Friday’s game, helping the Mavericks close a 23-4 deficit to 27-14.

“Dylon McCord, she does that sometimes; she gets hot and hits some baskets sometimes,” Brunk said. “She is second on the team in 3-point percentage with Ashlyn Roffine. We know that when Dylon gets hot she may know down two or three. We were glad to see her get going, because in conference play she hasn’t had a night like that, because it’s a little more difficult against the teams that we play.”

The Belles outscored the Mavericks, 17-12, following their hot start. The lead soon swelled to 41-17 midway through the third quarter.

“We were a little shaky against the press early, but after we settled down we were getting breakaways and we were getting layup (opportunity),” Brunk said. “We didn’t finish off the play at times, but that’s growth. At have the right idea; it’s just about being a basketball player and finishing.”

Catherine Althoff and Kaitlin Tarini finished with 19 and 13 points, respectively, for the winners. Mount St. Mary’s (7-11, 1-4) hadn’t won since posting back-to-back wins over Fountain Lake and Arkadelphia at the Spa City Classic in late December.

Accord’s nine first half points led the Mavericks who, after Friday’s loss, have dropped 44 in a row.

“It’s hard to keep a good attitude with this team, because we’re down and we haven’t won since last season, but we really work hard at keeping a positive attitude,” Sabrina Phonkhoumphon said following Friday’s game. “We make sure we keep our head right and keep a positive attitude throughout the season.
