Southside baseball coach Dale Harpenau said Thursday the Mavericks are ready to get on the field.

The Mavericks have been relegated to their indoor facility because of all the January and February rain.

The Mavericks open the season March 6 against Alma.

“For us to just be able to get on a baseball field will be nice,” Harpenau said. “With renovations going on at our facility right now, just to get the field and play will be nice. The monotony of being inside, sometimes it can become a little tough.”

The first order of business is to establish the pitching staff.

“It’s going to be by committee to a certain degree,” Harpenau said. “I think we’re going to have the ability to throw strikes and compete on the mound. The key to that is we’re going to have to be able to play defense.

“We’re going to have to be able to play catch.”

Senior Matt Schilling is the most established Game 1 starter, Harpenau said. Schilling will also play shortstop.

Senior center fielder Breck Burris and catcher Caleb Emmert headline a small but experienced senior class.

“Our whole senior class are guys that have been playing,” Harpenau said. “They’re going to have to show some leadership, and they have. This has been a really good senior group this year.”
